in the spirit of read write poem

August 6, 2009

I just finished my response to the prompt provided by Dorianne Laux. It was a terrific prompt, extremely challenging and detailed. I encourage you to read the prompt. It inspired me to brainstorm lists (concrete words from my past, present and future), use my five senses, encompass light and dark, select an abstract word for the title. Am I forgetting anything? Oh, yes — achieve everything in 23 lines.

I’ve posted mine: “Slipknot” (a concrete word I’m attempting to use abstractly) over at “i am maureen” (new folks, you’ll need the password; leave a comment here and I’ll send it to you). There is the question of whether or not I succeeded at the prompt. I attempted it, for sure. But I got mired in the past. I made lists for present and future but never got to them. I didn’t use all five senses. I think it could take the rest of my life to write a perfect poem with the prompt. And I love that. I also love that I can take up the challenge again and again and get a small something to work with.

Please excuse the sentimentality and self-indulgence of the piece. There are some things I need to write about, and I have a theory about needing to get some of the “dancing around it” out of my system before I can nail it.
