oooooh-ing (not ahhhh-ing) for read write poem
The prompt was to write a poem that’s dominated by a repeating vowel sound. I chose the ü sound, as in lewd and dude and mood. Thankfully, I had the sense not to rhyme like that, although it was tempting.
Jill and I used the vowel prompt — along with some prompts from Judy Reeves’ The Writer’s Retreat Kit — to spark our poems over sushi and beer. It’s our last writing date for a while. It’s August. Did you know families take vacations with total disregard for how it may take writing buddies in opposite directions? Absurd.
So, my attempt is (you guessed it!) here at “i am maureen.” It was written in 20 minutes while eating salad with chop sticks. Of course, I tweaked some while I typed it in, but it’s still in the newborn kitten stage: slimy and wet and unable to open its eyes. In fact, it’s not done. It’s supposed to be a poem about being pursued in various ways. It’s supposed to start with nightmares and bad relationships but then progress to the thrill of being pursued in a good way. It doesn’t make it to that end point. Not yet.
