My poem “Word problems” (which I drafted during NaPoWriMo — poetry challenges work!*) is up at Umbrella in its special back-to-school poetry syllabus. It’s a very cool themed-addition to the magazine, and I’m thrilled to be included in it.

How wonderful that I knew this was in the works while I sheltered a storm of rejections last week! A group of poems was rejected, and the manuscript was rejected twice. I learned about the manuscript’s initial “no” through an email that made me feel good (even if it turns out to be a form letter). The editor said my project was interesting and contained many strong poems. I heard about the manuscript’s second “no” when I saw on another blog a poet’s announcement that he’d won the contest. No word yet from the publishers, though, and maybe that’s normal. I’m never sure how these things work. I do know I’ve felt a pull to revise the manuscript.

Even though I still have a few sets of poems out there and the manuscript is still circulating in some places, there were a bunch of deadlines yesterday and today that I regret I’m missing. I’ll have to look ahead to the next round of opportunities. August has been a wild and busy month with not as much time for poetry as I’d like. (Is there ever as much time as we’d like?) God bless the big yellow school bus who will cart my children away one week from today.

Congratulations! I must go read next.

(I missed deadlines, too, and had rejections lately — everything I’ve recently sent in has been returned. I always feel like giving up in these times, but won’t. Won’t give up. Won’t.)
