I’ve always paid attention to moments like this, every since Barbara Kingsolver wrote about it in one of her earlier novels – I believe she was on an airplane sitting next to a stranger, and the silence was not uncomfortable until they spoke a few perfunctory words to each other. I liked the idea of how silence can be transformed not by the interruption of sound, but by the alteration of the silence that comes AFTER the sound. 🙂 Hope that makes sense.
