penis paintings on friday, vagina monologues on saturday

February 5, 2011

Now that’s what I call a weekend!

Yesterday, I spent the evening at First Friday (one of those art walks lots of cities do) on Lark Street in Albany. I started at Elda’s with a rune and tarot reading with Tess, fellow poet and redhead. It was great fun, and whether you’re a believer or not, it’s great to consider symbols in the various contexts we find ourselves in. It’s a chance to focus on self-reflection.

While Tess and I were at Elda’s, Dan Wilcox, out for First Friday, too, wandered in. They walked with me (a spontaneous parade of poets!) to meet Jill at the Romaine Brooks Gallery on Hudson Street (located at Pride Center of the Capital Region) for Thomasa Nielsen’s “The Penile Colony” exhibit. (There’s a great write-up about it here.)

Thomasa’s work is incredible, and I really wish I could have purchased one of the paintings! It also made me want to start painting again myself, so I hope it planted a seed. Of course the subject matter — male nudes — created a stir. I am quite sure most people circling the gallery walls had probably touched a penis, but they were embarrassed — giggling, even, and blushing! — at getting close to the paintings of penises. Or staring too long. Don’t stare too long: you’ll go blind, right?

Tonight, Jill and I met (braving the ice and thunder and lightning and hail) for a performance of The Vagina Monologues at the College of St. Rose. I had never seen them before, and it was a terrific experience. Funny and frightening. Tender and angry. Honest. Honest. Honest. It’s surprising how brave it is — and how liberating — to talk about vaginas in 2011. 2011! Dear Foremothers, how the hell did you survive silence?

Penis paintings on Friday. Vagina Monologues on Saturday. What it amounts to immediately is a great weekend (and probably lots of weird spam comments on this post once the search engines get it). What it amounts to eventually, I hope, is food for my muse. I can feel some energy I haven’t felt in a while.

This reminds me of that song from Sound of Music (& the great recording of it by John Coltrane): “these are a few of my favorite things!”

Too much of a good thing, Carolee. It’s Sunday: take a cold shower.

What a great weekend! I’ve seen a couple production of The Vagina Monologues–one tipping toward the hilarious (and it was a theatre that let you bring in your wine glass, which tipped it even further*), and one by college students. Both, though, included poignant and powerful pieces, as well as the funnier ones.

*Literally, if you laughed too hard.
